Throughout Mexico mostly natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is being used to fuel water heaters. As a part of this project water saving devices such as low-flow showerheads and faucet regulators are distributed and installed free of charge by lady plumbers. The installation of these water saving devices in the projected 325’000 low-income urban households effectively reduce hot water dispensed from targeted water fixtures without reducing the level of comfort.
Project impacts and benefits:
The water usage of up to 5 million residents is expected to decrease by more than 40% because of this project. Furthermore, the savings in water will also positively impact consumption of fossil fuels, resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions. Besides the ecological aspects, this project will also deliver many social benefits. For example, about 500 lady plumbers are being trained and employed to carry out installation and monitoring of the water saving devices. With the help of this project these women will have an improved social statues due to their economic independence.
