Improved cookstoves in Maputo city, Mozambique

  • 1. No Poverty

  • 15. Life on Land
A large population in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, live in poor housing and hygienic conditions due to a lack of basic services. 95% of the population living in the Chamanculo C district uses cookstoves, with  low energy efficiency and require high amounts of charcoal for daily cooking activities. Charcoal use has negative health impacts related to the smoke inhalation in addition to causing a economic pressure for the families. Charcoal production is also one of the main causes of the deforestation.

The “Improved cookstoves in Chamanculo C, Maputo” project  involves the distribution of approximately 5,000 domestic fuel-efficient cook stoves to households within Chamanculo C. The goal of the project is to improve energy efficiency, conserve natural resources and improve living conditions for the local population.

The projected distributed Envirofit CH-2200 cookstoves, one of the world’s most fuel-efficient charcoal cookstove models. It can reduce  50% of charcoal consumption in comparison  to traditional stoves. The stoves will be sold to the families at a highly subsided cost, in exchange for the rights to the Voluntary Emission Reductions (VERs). Without this project, the majority of families would not have access to fuel-efficient cook stoves due to economic constraints.
The project started on March 2014, and the project has a 7 year operational lifetime.  This includes the annual monitoring activities and external carbon credit verification.

Project impacts and benefits:
  • In addition to the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, contributing to the mitigation of climate change, the project provide the following local benefits:
  • Up to 50% of savings in the charcoal consumed for cooking
  • Up to $ 190 yearly of savings for local families in charcoal needed for cooking
  • Reduced adverse health effects associated with smoke inhalation
  • Reduced cooking time, which will allow more time to be spent on other tasks
  • Reduced deforestation and degradation of forest as less wood will be need for charcoal production
“Our community knows that this project is something that should be treated as a treasure, not only because we bought the stoves but also as it's something that helps us a lot to progress in life. I hope we're not the only beneficiaries and that more communities will be involved later. ”
