Green Ammonia

Introduction

Ammonia is essential to global agriculture, underpinning fertilizers that feed billions. Yet its conventional production relies on fossil fuels and accounts for roughly 2 percent of the world’s total fossil energy use.

Gold Standard’s new Green Ammonia Methodology sets out a robust, high-integrity rulebook for projects that produce ammonia using renewable energy—solar, wind or other clean sources—rather than fossil fuels. By following these rules, developers can quantify the emissions they avoid and earn carbon credits for their climate-positive innovations.

The methodology is designed to unlock climate finance for technically and commercially challenging projects, accelerating the transition away from polluting ammonia plants. Every requirement is backed by a comprehensive Supplementary Information document, which lays out the scientific evidence, data sources and calculation approaches that ensure transparency and credibility.

This is the first methodology submitted under Gold Standard’s updated Requirements for methodology development and Requirements for additionality demonstration. After an initial round of public feedback and a redesign to align with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, we are now opening a second consultation period.

We invite all stakeholders—industry experts, project developers, civil society and regulators—to review the full draft methodology and share your comments. Your input will help refine this pioneering framework and drive scalable investment in green ammonia solutions.
